Huntertown Elementary PTO Meeting Minutes
October 9, 2007  

Architectural team gave presentation on upcoming renovation.  As of right now, the plan includes:

Add space to media center w/ shelves and reading group area

Move computer lab beside library

Renovate front boy/girl bathroom only – other student bathrooms will only get new petitions – no new toilets or sinks

Gym will be used by school and community and bathrooms will be available to gym users while allowing school to be secure.

There will be 2 small canopies and two separate entrances to the school with outside spaces for gatherings.

Goal is to allow more light into the school w/ more windows in cafeteria and view from lobby will look straight out into the courtyard.

Ventilation – air flow will be improved w/ one unit for each class in ceiling.  Code requirements for air flow and outdoor air flow have changed since school was originally built and will be updated

4-6 classes at a time will be remodeled and blocked off and not accessible to children.

Large demo jobs will be done after hours

Geothermal heating/air – no boilers – more efficient

Electrical capabilities will be increased and safety measures will be upgraded.

Fire alarms/sprinklers, emergency lighting, computer connections to classrooms

New computer paging intercom systems and web based - user friendly

More lighting in parking lot

Bathroom sinks rearranged so teachers can see students wash hands in front bathroom

Gym is separate from school for noise-600 students will fit in gym for assemblies

Building plans are not set in stone – some things will change as needed

Safety is very important and children will be safe. 

There is  - No asbestos-no mercury in thermostat, no pcp’s no lead paint –

Woodford Board of Education has been encouraged by firm to do daily on-site air monitoring.

4-6 classes will be isolated and partitioned off – arch will go over new evacuation routes

Soccer Field will be in water retention area to the far right of the school.

Geo-thermal will be 30 wells – 300 feet deep – all looped together surrounding school.

No convicted felons or sex offenders will be allowed on the job sites.

Contractors are required to do background checks on employees.

ID Tags are required while on job site.

Clothing restrictions are given to construction contractors – no sleeveless shirts or offensive language on clothing.

Worker have restricted access – not allowed to use school restrooms – portable toilets only

If air quality drops, school will be evacuated

All floor model heater/air will be removed

10%-15% outside air in current units – new units circulate 37% cool/heated dehumidified outside air – less germs!

Construction is scheduled to start mid Feb 2008 & to Finish Aug 2009

Classes will be under construction for 90-120 days at a time.

Gym will hopefully be first phase.

Multipurpose room will be used for class rooms, students will have to sometimes eat within classrooms.

7.51 million construction budget

Bruce suggested having a science week – Science scores need improving – Bruce’s father-in-law is a physics professor – Bruce will coordinate.
