Minutes – September 21, 2006

Meeting called to order at 5:18.

Members present: Kim Parker Brown, Debbie Webb, Sheryl Bruens, Sharon Willmarth, Betty English, Genelle Meads, Terri Tonges and Brenda Cissell.

  • The agenda was approved.  (S. Willmarth made a motion to approve, T. Tonges seconded.)

  • Minutes for the August 17 meeting were reviewed and approved. Mrs. Bruens made a motion to approve the minutes; Mrs. Meads seconded this.

  • The council reviewed the minutes for the School Climate, Professional Development and Technology committee August meetings.

  • Mrs. Parker-Brown discussed asking parents to serve on SBDM Committees as a way to get them involved in the council.

  • The council reviewed the proposed Primary Literacy Plan and Intermediate Literacy Plan. The primary teachers opted to adopt the Four Blocks (guided reading, writing, independent reading and word work) approach and listed the book sets and manipulatives that need to be purchased for this program.  The intermediate teachers felt that their focus should be more geared to “reading to learn” than to “learning to read.  They also listed textbooks and other materials needed to implement this program.  The council voted to approve both plans and the purchase of the necessary materials. (Motion by B. Cissell, second by B. English.)

  • Mrs. Parker-Brown presented the council with a table listing all available 2006 CATS testing data and with the improvement plan that was presented to the School Board on September 18.  Huntertown has improved in Social Studies, Arts and Humanities, Practical Living/Vocational, Writing and in the overall score.  Huntertown scores declined in Reading and Science.

  • The council reviewed and improved the new Kindergarten report card.  The report card was condensed to fit onto a regular 8 ½ X 11 sheet of paper and a fourth column was added to reflect the fact that the primary grades will now be receiving grades four times per year rather than three as in previous years. (Motion by T. Tonges, second by B. English)

  • Mrs. Webb indicated that the intermediate teachers would like to add a grade for conduct and a comment box.  She also presented the council with examples of report cards from Fayette county schools using the same software with these features.  Mrs. Parker-Brown agreed to ask the Technology committee to submit a request for training for the intermediate teachers to learn more about the software. This request was approved after a motion by G. Meads and a second by D. Webb.

  • Mrs. Parker-Brown met with the Spanish teachers at WCHS to discuss the implementation of the Huntertown/WCHS ESL partnership. The school board approved this plan as a pilot program, which could eventually be expanded to other Woodford county elementary schools and agreed to pay $1800.00 towards the costs of the bus for the WCHS students.  Spanish 3 students will come to Huntertown once a week to speak with ESL children in both Spanish and English.

  • Elections for new SBDM council members will be held in November on a date to be set by the PTO.

  • All decisions were by consensus.

  • A motion to close was made by T. Tonges and seconded by G. Meads.
